The Jacksonville Jaguars have made a notable move to bolster their secondary by re-signing veteran safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. to a one-year deal, the team announced Sunday. This marks Gipson’s return to Jacksonville, where he previously played a key role from 2016 to 2018, including a memorable run to the AFC Championship Game in the 2017 season.

At 34 years old, Gipson will begin the 2024 season under challenging circumstances, as he faces a six-game suspension for a violation of the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Despite this setback, Gipson’s experience and leadership are expected to be valuable assets once he returns to the field.

Gipson’s most recent tenure was with the San Francisco 49ers, where he demonstrated his playmaking ability by intercepting five passes and starting 17 games in the 2022 season. However, his interception total dropped to just one in 16 starts during the following season. Over his 12-year NFL career, Gipson has accumulated 33 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns, and has also recorded 684 tackles, three fumble recoveries, and 2.5 sacks. His career journey includes stints with the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Chicago Bears, with a notable Pro Bowl appearance in 2014.

To make room for Gipson on the roster, the Jaguars have released linebacker Ty Summers. Summers, 28, who has accumulated 60 tackles in 67 games over five seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Jaguars, and New Orleans Saints, will now seek a new opportunity.

Gipson’s return to the Jaguars adds a seasoned veteran to a team looking to make strides in the upcoming season, reinforcing the secondary with his proven track record and leadership.
