Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips is set to make a significant return to the field, as he comes off the active/physically unable to perform list and rejoins practice, head coach Mike McDaniel announced on Monday. Phillips’ return marks a hopeful development for the Dolphins, as the 25-year-old linebacker had been sidelined since a torn Achilles cut his 2023-24 season short.
Phillips’ season ended abruptly on November 24 when he suffered the injury during a victory over the New York Jets. At the time of the injury, Phillips was enjoying a breakout season, recording 6.5 sacks through just eight games. His performance was a bright spot for the Dolphins, as he appeared poised for a career year.
“Jaelan was playing with a different level of confidence,” McDaniel remarked at a press conference held at the Baptist Health Training Complex in Miami Gardens. “He wants to be great in the worst way. It is a long vision challenge to attack this injury appropriately. He wants to fix the issue and go play.”
Typically, the recovery timetable for a torn Achilles ranges from six to nine months, according to the Hospital for Special Surgery. As of Monday, it will have been eight months and 19 days since Phillips sustained the injury. His progress is a testament to his determination and resilience.
“What I got to learn about Jaelan Phillips is he’s a very capable, strong learner,” McDaniel continued. “This was a test of internal fortitude.”
Phillips, selected as the No. 18 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has accumulated 22 sacks through his first 42 games with the Dolphins. Remarkably, he did not miss a game during his first two seasons and made six starts last season. His return will be a welcome boost for a defense that has already faced challenges with injuries.
The Dolphins’ linebacker corps remains a mix of talent and uncertainty. Emmanuel Ogbah, Chop Robinson, and Quinton Bell are among the top healthy outside linebackers. However, Bradley Chubb, who also suffered an injury—an ACL tear in his right knee last December—remains on the active/physically unable to perform list with no clear timetable for his return.
As the Dolphins prepare for their second preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Saturday at 7 p.m. EDT in Miami Gardens, Phillips’ return to practice will be closely watched. His presence on the field will be a key factor as the Dolphins look to solidify their defense and prepare for the upcoming season.
