Breaking News: Bills’ Hopes Dim as Key Quarterback and Wide Receiver Land on Injured Reserve

The Buffalo Bills made several roster changes on Tuesday morning, placing quarterback Shane Buechele and wide receiver Chase Claypool on injured reserve. Additionally, the team waived wide receiver Bryan Thompson with an injury designation. The Bills also confirmed the signings of quarterback Ben DiNucci and wide receivers Damiere Byrd and Deon Cain.

Buechele sustained a neck injury during the Bills’ 33-6 loss to the Chicago Bears on Saturday, where he completed 6-of-10 passes for 53 yards, threw an interception, and added 22 rushing yards on three carries while being sacked six times.

Claypool, who has missed most of training camp and preseason due to a turf toe injury from the first day of practices, is now on his fourth team since 2022. While NFL rules changed this offseason to allow teams to designate two players placed on injured reserve before final roster cuts for return, it appears that Claypool’s season is over due to the timing of his designation.

Thompson also suffered a hamstring injury during the preseason loss, playing only eight snaps without any targets.

While the signings of DiNucci and Byrd were anticipated, the addition of Cain, 28, is new information. Cain, a former sixth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2018 NFL Draft, has previously played for the Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Philadelphia Eagles, with a brief stint in the USFL with the Birmingham Stallions. He has nine career NFL receptions for 124 yards, all from the 2019 season.
