Breaking News: Star Safety Joins the Eagles
Despite ongoing speculation linking Justin Simmons to the Philadelphia Eagles, the veteran safety will not be heading to Philadelphia. Instead, Simmons has signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, valued at $8 million, with $7.5 million guaranteed. The Eagles will face Simmons when the Falcons visit Lincoln Financial Field for their Week 2 Monday Night Football matchup.
The Eagles were considered a strong contender for Simmons’ services, partly due to his previous experience under current Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and defensive backs coach Christian Parker during their time with the Denver Broncos. Additionally, the Eagles’ need for a seasoned safety made Simmons a logical target. However, with Simmons now committed to the Falcons, the Eagles will have to explore other options to address their safety concerns.
As the 2024 NFL season approaches, the Eagles’ safety situation remains somewhat unsettled. Reed Blankenship and C.J. Gardner-Johnson are projected to start, but Gardner-Johnson has been dealing with a shoulder injury that has kept him out of several practices. Despite the injury, there is optimism that he will be ready for the season opener or shortly thereafter.
The depth behind the starting safeties is less clear. Sydney Brown remains on the active/PUP list, and while James Bradberry is making strides in transitioning to safety, his experience at the position is limited. Avonte Maddox has been taking more reps at safety, with Quinyon Mitchell stepping in as the first-team nickel cornerback. Tristin McCollum is also vying for a roster spot but remains on the bubble. Additionally, the Eagles signed former Broncos safety Caden Sterns, who has yet to practice due to an ongoing injury recovery.
Before training camp, several notable safety options were still available on the market, including Simmons, Eddie Jackson, and Quandre Diggs. However, with the market now largely depleted, the Eagles appear to be moving forward with their current roster. There is speculation that the team might consider a reunion with Jalen Mills to bolster their safety depth.
As the season progresses, the Eagles’ ability to manage their safety situation will be critical. The team will need to monitor the health and performance of their current safeties and remain flexible in their approach to addressing any potential deficiencies in their secondary.
