Browns Scoop Up Former Packers Safety Tyler Coyle After Preseason Showdown

On Friday, the Cleveland Browns made a notable roster move, claiming former Green Bay Packers safety Tyler Coyle off waivers. This acquisition follows Coyle’s recent appearance against the Browns in their preseason opener, where he played 14 defensive snaps, showcasing his abilities against his new team.

Coyle’s journey to Cleveland has been anything but conventional. He began his professional career with the Dallas Cowboys after going undrafted from Purdue, having previously played at UConn. His stint with the Cowboys lasted two years, and in 2023, he signed with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL. However, the league’s merger with the XFL, which led to the formation of the UFL, left Coyle as a free agent.

In the final week of the 2023 NFL season, Coyle joined the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad and remained there throughout the playoffs. Despite his involvement with the team, he did not see any action in regular-season or postseason games. His last NFL appearance was a brief stint with the Cowboys in 2022, where he played in one game.

To make space for Coyle, the Browns waived safety Brady Breeze, who was released with an injury designation. Breeze, a former draft pick, had led Cleveland in tackles during Week 1 of the preseason with 11, including a sack. Coyle contributed with three tackles against the Browns, two of which were solo efforts.

Coyle’s release from Green Bay, along with former Wisconsin Badgers long snapper Peter Bowden, came as the Packers sought to bolster their roster. The team signed running back Nate McCrary and linebacker Chris Russell to address depth issues exacerbated by injuries. With Green Bay’s starters sitting out against the Denver Broncos this week, the Packers needed additional depth at key positions.

Coyle’s arrival in Cleveland presents an opportunity for him to reestablish himself in the NFL. The Browns’ decision to bring him on board reflects their interest in exploring his potential and adding depth to their defensive backfield. As the preseason progresses, Coyle’s performance will be closely scrutinized as he seeks to secure a more permanent role with the Browns.
