Raiders Part Ways with Young QB Following Struggles in Preseason Game

The Las Vegas Raiders are edging closer to naming their Week 1 starting quarterback, but they’ve already made a decisive move regarding the third spot on the depth chart. After months of speculation and competition, the team announced on August 14 that they have waived quarterback Anthony Brown, leaving newly signed veteran Nathan Peterman to secure the role of QB3.

Brown, just 26 years old, joined the Raiders in January and showed flashes of potential during training camp. However, his performance in the Raiders’ first preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings raised concerns. Completing just 1-of-3 passes for 24 yards, Brown didn’t inspire the confidence the coaching staff needed. The limited opportunities to throw the ball suggested a lack of trust in his abilities.

With preseason serving as a proving ground for backup players, the decision to bring in Peterman was a clear indication that the Raiders were considering other options. Peterman, a seasoned quarterback, quickly edged out Brown for the third spot on the roster, leaving the undrafted rookie Carter Bradley likely eyeing a practice squad position.

While Peterman’s role appears set, the more intriguing battle continues between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew for the starting quarterback job. Minshew, a well-traveled veteran, joined the Raiders after nearly leading the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs last season. Despite the Colts’ desire to retain him, they couldn’t match the $15 million guaranteed over two years offered by Raiders’ GM Tom Telesco.

Minshew’s experience and fit within Luke Getsy’s West Coast offense make him a strong candidate for the starting role. However, O’Connell, with only one season under his belt, offers significant upside as a young quarterback with room to grow. As the Raiders aim for a playoff push, Minshew’s track record of 37 NFL starts may give him the edge, though O’Connell’s potential could keep him in the conversation.

Ultimately, the Raiders’ decision on their starting quarterback will hinge on whether they prioritize Minshew’s stability and experience or O’Connell’s promise and potential. But with Brown out of the picture, the team’s QB depth chart is starting to take shape.
