Lions Reveal Grim Update on Injuries, Including Setback for Key RB

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Despite a number of injuries affecting both offense and defense, the Detroit Lions remain optimistic as they approach their season opener. Head coach Dan Campbell shared on Tuesday that several injured players are expected to return following Saturday’s preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This group includes running back Jahmyr Gibbs, tight end Sam LaPorta, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler, and offensive tackle Dan Skipper. Campbell also mentioned that defensive tackle DJ Reader might start participating in individual drills soon.

Jahmyr Gibbs Injury Update: Should Fantasy Managers Be Worried?

“We’re looking forward to having a lot of these guys back, hopefully by Sunday,” Campbell said. “Gibbs is progressing well. We wish we had more practice time with him, but he’s healing on schedule and should be ready to get back into form.”

Last week was tough for the Lions’ cornerbacks, with veteran Carlton Davis III missing practice and rookies Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Terrion Arnold both leaving Monday’s session with injuries.

Campbell announced that Ennis Rakestraw (ankle) is expected to return to practice on Monday. Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson, who is slated to be the starting nickel and has played in both preseason games, will have limited participation. The team anticipates that Terrion Arnold will be back by mid-next week.

“Arnold should get a practice session in before the team breaks. He’s progressing well, and I’m not worried,” Campbell said. “As of now, I’m optimistic that most of our players will be ready for Week 1.”

Campbell also updated on rookie offensive guard Christian Mahogany, who missed several weeks of training camp due to illness. Mahogany started the process of getting back into shape last week and is working on regaining his conditioning and strength.
