The San Francisco 49ers have made a tough decision as they finalize their 53-man roster ahead of the 2024 NFL season, releasing veteran running back Matt Breida. As the team looks to avenge their Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, this move marks a significant moment in their offseason.

Breida, who began his career with the 49ers back in 2017, had stints with the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and New York Giants before returning to San Francisco. Despite being a reliable option throughout his career, the 28-year-old struggled to make an impact during the 2024 preseason. Breida managed just 29 rushing yards on 15 carries, a performance that ultimately led to his release.

Once a standout in the 49ers’ backfield, Breida enjoyed his best season in 2018, where he rushed for 814 yards and scored three touchdowns. While never the featured starter, he consistently delivered as a dependable second or third option for every team he played for. However, with his production in decline, San Francisco decided to move forward with a younger running back group.

Breida now faces an uncertain future, though he won’t need to hit the waiver wire and could attract interest from teams in need of depth. Alternatively, if opportunities don’t present themselves elsewhere, Breida could potentially remain with the 49ers on their practice squad, giving him a chance to stay in the mix as the season progresses.

With his best years seemingly behind him, only time will tell if the veteran running back will catch on with another team or if his NFL journey is nearing its end.
