As the Green Bay Packers finalize their 53-man roster for the 2024 NFL season, significant changes have taken place in their running back room. The Packers have opted to carry three running backs into the season: Josh Jacobs, Emanuel Wilson, and Marshawn Lloyd. This decision comes on the heels of the release of Aaron Jones, the franchise’s third all-time leading rusher.
Josh Jacobs, who was signed in free agency, brings a proven track record to Green Bay. Jacobs’ addition marks a notable shift in the Packers’ backfield strategy, as he joins the team following the departure of Jones. Emanuel Wilson, an undrafted free agent who made a strong impression last season, continues to impress during training camp and preseason. Meanwhile, Marshawn Lloyd, a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, rounds out the trio.
However, the Packers’ roster moves are not without their setbacks. The team has placed running back AJ Dillon on season-ending injured reserve. Dillon, who re-signed with Green Bay earlier this spring, will miss the entire 2024 season due to a neck injury. This marks Dillon’s second stinger in nine months, an ailment that has unfortunately derailed what many hoped would be a bounce-back season for the fifth-year pro.
Dillon, affectionately known as the “Mayor of Door County,” had previously shown up to training camp in peak physical condition, ready to rebound from a disappointing 2023 campaign. Despite his determination and commitment to the Packers, Dillon’s injury has forced him off the field for the year.
In a statement released on social media, Dillon expressed his gratitude for the support he has received. “Thank you all for the overwhelming support during this tough time. This injury is a tough blow, but I’m staying positive and surrounded by an incredible support system. Right now, my focus is on getting healthy, and I’m rooting for my brothers to take care of business,” Dillon wrote.

The possibility of Dillon returning this season remains slim unless he and the Packers come to an agreement on an injury settlement. Even then, teams may be hesitant to sign a player with recent neck injuries. For now, Green Bay will move forward with Jacobs, Wilson, and Lloyd as they look to make their mark in the 2024 season.
