In a strategic move to bolster their quarterback depth, the Baltimore Ravens have re-signed former Pro Bowl QB Tyler Huntley, with expectations that he will challenge journeyman Josh Johnson for the backup role behind Lamar Jackson. The news of Huntley’s return was first reported by Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz on August 30.

According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, Huntley is set to join the Ravens’ practice squad, a decision reflecting the team’s current roster configuration. Released by the Cleveland Browns just a day earlier, Huntley’s return is seen as a valuable addition for Baltimore, even if it doesn’t immediately place him ahead of Johnson on the depth chart.

Huntley’s Return: A Strategic Move

Huntley’s credentials are underscored by his Pro Bowl appearance in 2022, which he earned as an injury replacement for Buffalo’s Josh Allen. While Huntley may not be a high-flying offensive force, his efficiency and mobility have been notable assets. His performance in relief of Jackson during the 2021 season highlighted his ability to lead the Ravens to crucial victories, including a memorable touchdown run against the Green Bay Packers.

Huntley’s familiarity with the Ravens’ system and his track record of stepping up when Jackson was sidelined makes him a safer bet as a backup. This is particularly significant given Jackson’s injury history, which has seen him miss multiple games over the past seasons.

Josh Johnson’s Status and Competition

In contrast, Johnson, a seasoned veteran who has played for eight different teams, including the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has struggled at times this summer. Johnson’s sole start for the Ravens resulted in a defeat, and his recent performances have not been reassuring.

The Ravens’ decision to retain Johnson, despite his less impressive summer, underscores their preference for experience at the quarterback position. However, Huntley’s return offers a potentially stronger option for the team, reflecting the Ravens’ commitment to ensuring reliable coverage behind their star quarterback.

The Impact on Rookie Quarterbacks

The addition of Huntley to the practice squad also impacts the team’s rookie quarterbacks. Devin Leary, the sixth-round draft pick, struggled throughout the summer and did not make the 53-man roster. His inability to secure a spot highlights the challenges rookies face in transitioning to NFL play. Similarly, undrafted rookie Emory Jones also fell short of expectations, failing to make the final roster despite his strong arm.

With the new rule allowing teams to have an “emergency” third quarterback on game days, Huntley’s presence becomes increasingly valuable. His experience and reliability offer the Ravens a crucial safety net, ensuring they have a competent quarterback ready if Jackson or Johnson cannot play.

In summary, the Ravens’ move to bring back Tyler Huntley underscores their focus on stability and experience at the quarterback position. As the backup quarterback competition unfolds, Huntley’s familiarity with the Ravens’ system and his proven ability to perform under pressure could prove pivotal in shaping the team’s quarterback depth for the upcoming season.
