Tyus Bowser #54 of the Baltimore Ravens
The Seattle Seahawks have made a significant addition to their defense by signing veteran outside linebacker Tyus Bowser. As reported by ESPN’s Brady Henderson, Bowser, 29, joins the Seahawks after garnering interest from the Dallas Cowboys, who had been seeking reinforcements for their defensive line. Instead, Bowser opted to reunite with Seahawks’ defensive assistant Mike Macdonald, under whom he played during his time with the Baltimore Ravens.
Bowser’s decision to sign with Seattle follows a visit with the Cowboys just days prior. Despite interest from Dallas, Bowser chose to rejoin Macdonald, who was Baltimore’s defensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023, as well as a key defensive assistant during Bowser’s first four years with the Ravens. The move brings experience and versatility to Seattle’s defense as they aim to strengthen their pass rush.
“The Seahawks announced three practice squad moves, including the addition of OLB Tyus Bowser,” wrote Henderson. “The 29-year-old Bowser reunites with Mike Macdonald, having spent his entire career to this point with Baltimore. Seattle also signed CB Faion Hicks and released OT Garret Greenfield.”
The signing comes at a critical time for the Seahawks, who have been actively pursuing pass rushers. Bowser joins a unit that has also recently added Tyreke Smith to the practice squad and traded for Trevis Gipson. With veteran Uchenna Nwosu nursing a sprained knee, Bowser’s presence provides much-needed depth and versatility to the linebacker corps.
Bowser’s experience in coverage sets him apart as a well-rounded linebacker. Over his six-year career with Baltimore, Bowser accumulated four interceptions and allowed only two touchdowns while yielding a stellar 69.0 passer rating when targeted. Known for his reliability in dropping back, Bowser’s skill set complements Seattle’s defensive scheme.
During his best season in 2021, Bowser started all 17 games, recording 59 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and seven sacks. However, injuries have slowed him down recently, with a knee injury sidelining him for the entire 2023 season after missing significant time in 2022 due to an Achilles injury.
Despite his recent setbacks, Bowser’s career totals of 152 tackles and 19.5 sacks show his value as a proven pass rusher. With his familiarity in Macdonald’s system and his track record of success when healthy, Bowser could be a key contributor for the Seahawks this season. If he’s ready to go, Bowser could see action as early as Week 1, providing Seattle with a boost as they gear up for their 2024 campaign.
