The New Orleans Saints are bringing back a familiar face to their front office. Former general manager Randy Mueller is returning to the organization more than two decades after his initial tenure ended. According to a report by NOLA.com’s Jeff Duncan, Mueller will join the Saints as a full-time advisor, formalizing a role he has already been playing behind the scenes.

Mueller, 63, was involved with the team during the 2024 NFL Draft in an unofficial capacity and attended training camp. His close relationship with current general manager Mickey Loomis played a key role in his return. Mueller is expected to focus on assisting both the pro and college scouting departments.

Mueller’s History with the Saints

Mueller first served as the Saints’ general manager during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. His debut was a notable one—he led the team to its first-ever playoff victory and was named Executive of the Year. Despite his success, a 7-9 campaign in 2001 led to his firing. Loomis, who had been hired by Mueller, stepped into the GM role and has held it ever since.

Mueller went on to a second GM stint with the Miami Dolphins in 2005. Though his tenure was marked by a 16-32 record, including a dismal 1-15 campaign in 2007, Mueller remained a respected football mind. After his departure from Miami, he spent 10 years in the Chargers’ front office as senior executive of football operations.

Return to the NFL

This move to the Saints marks Mueller’s return to the NFL after several years away. His most recent role was with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons, where he served as director of player personnel. Now, Mueller will join a seasoned advisory staff in New Orleans. He will be one of three ex-general managers working under Loomis this season, alongside Dave Ziegler (former Raiders GM) and Jeff Ireland (who replaced Mueller in Miami and stayed until 2018).

Mueller’s wealth of experience in talent evaluation will provide a valuable boost to the Saints’ scouting departments, as the team looks to maintain its competitiveness in the NFC South. His return also underscores the deep connections and respect he still holds within the organization after all these years.
