The Carolina Panthers have made the decision to part ways with K’Lavon Chaisson, releasing the former first-round edge-rusher before he could make his debut in a regular-season game for the team. The move, announced Tuesday, marks the end of a short-lived experiment for Chaisson in Carolina.

Chaisson, drafted 20th overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020, struggled to establish himself as a regular defensive contributor throughout his tenure with the team. In his first two seasons, he made 11 starts but saw a significant decline in playing time as he failed to secure a consistent role. With only five sacks to his name, his market value was limited this offseason.

Carolina took a chance on the 25-year-old by signing him to a one-year deal with $500,000 guaranteed. However, the Panthers’ decision to release Chaisson will result in that amount becoming dead money on their cap but will save the team $2 million. This move is a crucial step for a Panthers team that has been tight against the salary cap and facing challenges along the edge.

The timing of this release comes as Carolina grapples with depth issues on the defensive line. With D.J. Wonnum and Amare Barno placed on the reserve/PUP list, sidelining them for at least the first four weeks of the season, the Panthers are left with a thin edge-rushing group. Currently, the roster includes Jadeveon Clowney, DJ Johnson, Eku Leota, and Jamie Sheriff.

Chaisson’s departure frees up cap space that the Panthers could use to bring in another edge rusher who can contribute immediately. The team was already exploring options to bolster their pass-rushing unit, so a new acquisition is likely on the horizon.

Despite the setback, Chaisson’s NFL career isn’t necessarily over. There’s a possibility he could join the Panthers’ practice squad, or he may find an opportunity with another team looking for depth on the edge. His experience on special teams could make him a viable candidate for a rotational or end-of-the-roster spot with a new organization as he continues to pursue a long-term role in the league.
