The Detroit Lions are on the brink of losing another outside linebacker…
Detroit Lions outside linebacker James Houston seems unlikely to return to the field in the near future.
Houston was a healthy scratch for the game against the Los Angeles Rams, and at 25 years old, he has become a subject of ongoing debate among the coaching staff. They are weighing the benefits he provides against those of other players who offer greater versatility or contribute more significantly on special teams.
Although the Detroit Lions coaching staff recognizes Houston’s elite skill set, they are struggling to prioritize him over other players who may have more versatility or special teams impact. While Houston is expected to appear in several games this season and could still support Aaron Glenn’s defense, his long-term future with the Lions is increasingly uncertain.
Detroit Lions Head coach Dan Campbell shed light on Houston’s inactivity and the challenges he faces moving forward. “A lot of it comes down to whether he or a defensive back is more beneficial to the team. Special teams play a significant role, and injuries in other areas can influence the decision,” Campbell explained. “Sometimes you need additional insurance in certain positions.”
Currently, veteran Marcus Davenport is favored to play alongside Aidan Hutchinson, allowing Campbell to utilize a player who contributes to both the secondary and special teams. Derrick Barnes has excelled at the SAM linebacker position, and Malcolm Rodriguez has also been given playing time. Campbell expressed confidence in these players and their contributions.
Detroit Lions Campbell further elaborated, “We’re evaluating the potential production and playing time for Houston. We’re working with him, and if an opportunity arises, we’d like to use him. We’ll address it as it comes.”
Given Houston’s abilities, another team might consider acquiring him, potentially offering a fourth- or fifth-round draft pick to see if he can be more effective elsewhere. Sometimes, a player may not fit well within a particular scheme, which can lead to limited opportunities despite their talent.
