The Minnesota Vikings opened their 2024 season with a commanding win over the New York Giants, a performance that may not have shocked the NFL world but did showcase head coach Kevin O’Connell’s ability to get the best out of his team. With journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold at the helm, the Vikings put together an efficient offensive display, easily dispatching the Giants, 27-10.

Darnold, often written off after stints with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, delivered an impressive showing, completing 19 of 24 passes for 208 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His 113.2 passer rating was a testament to O’Connell’s coaching, as the Vikings executed a well-balanced offensive game plan. Despite not being a team with sky-high expectations entering 2024, Minnesota looked sharp in Week 1.

However, it’s worth noting the competition. The Giants, projected to be one of the NFL’s worst teams this season, didn’t offer much resistance. While the Vikings deserve credit, the true test lies ahead.

Week 2 Brings a Challenge in the 49ers

Minnesota’s next opponent, the reigning NFC North champions San Francisco 49ers, will offer a far sterner test. Fresh off a 13-point victory over the New York Jets, the 49ers looked dominant even without star running back Christian McCaffrey, who could return for their Week 2 matchup. San Francisco’s defense, arguably the best in the league, will provide a significant hurdle for Darnold and company.

To add to the Vikings’ challenge, wide receiver Jordan Addison is ruled out for the game due to an ankle injury suffered in Week 1. Addison, who had an outstanding rookie season in 2023, was expected to be a key contributor alongside star receiver Justin Jefferson.

Jefferson’s Time to Shine

With Addison out, the spotlight will once again be on Jefferson, who signed a blockbuster four-year, $140 million extension, making him the highest-paid receiver in the league. Jefferson’s elite talent will be crucial against the formidable 49ers defense.

The Vikings will need another strong showing from Darnold, solid protection up front, and a big game from Jefferson to pull off the upset against a Super Bowl-caliber opponent. After an encouraging start to the season, Week 2 will be a true test of how far this Minnesota team can go.
