Packers Add Fifth-Round Pick to Active Roster Following Jordan Love’s Injury:
The Green Bay Packers have strengthened their quarterback situation for Week 2 due to starter Jordan Love’s injury. With Love’s status downgraded to doubtful because of a knee issue, the team is relying on backup Malik Willis for their game against the Indianapolis Colts. To solidify their depth chart, the Packers promoted Sean Clifford from the practice squad to serve as the backup quarterback to Willis.
Clifford, a 2023 fifth-round pick, has been with the practice squad since late August and will now step in as the No. 2 quarterback behind Willis. Willis, who joined the Packers in a trade on August 26, has limited experience with both the team’s system and as an NFL quarterback. He has started only three games in his career, all during his rookie season with the Tennessee Titans, and has played a total of 12 games, accumulating 350 passing yards, 3 interceptions, 144 rushing yards, and 1 touchdown.

In contrast, Clifford has even less experience, with just two games and 13 offensive snaps in the NFL, totaling 3 rushing attempts for -2 yards and no pass attempts.
The Packers face significant risk by starting Willis and Clifford, especially in their first home game of the season at Lambeau Field. The decision not to place Love on injured reserve suggests the team hopes for his quick recovery, but the challenge of competing in the NFC North without a veteran backup could prove costly if Love’s absence extends. The team might need to consider trade options or other moves if Willis does not perform well, as waiting to make changes could impact their preparation for future games.
