Los Angeles Chargers outside linebackers Andrew Farmer II
The Denver Broncos are making moves to address their thinning defense after losing edge rusher Baron Browning to an ankle injury during their Week 2 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team has signed former Chargers linebacker Andrew Farmer to their practice squad, as reported by KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson on September 17.
Farmer, an undrafted free agent out of Division II Lane College in 2023, spent time with the Chargers last season. Though his NFL experience is limited, logging just 60 defensive snaps (12% snap share) and 48 special teams snaps (60% share) in eight appearances, his college career suggests significant upside.
At 6-foot-4, Farmer was a standout in college, recording 11.5 sacks for Lane College in 2021, earning All-Conference honors. Though he took a step back in 2022 with 6.0 sacks, Farmer’s ability to disrupt opposing offenses remained evident. According to Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, Farmer “dominated the level of competition he played at” and earned attention from scouts after a strong postseason.
Pauline highlighted Farmer’s explosiveness and ability to rush the edge with speed while maintaining excellent pad level and hand technique. While Farmer’s first step and pursuit speed were critiqued, his overall playmaking ability and high motor make him a valuable addition to the Broncos’ developmental squad.
What Farmer’s Signing Means for the Broncos
While Farmer’s immediate role will be on the practice squad, his signing raises questions about the Broncos’ plans amidst multiple injuries. Head coach Sean Payton’s squad is dealing with injuries across the board, including right tackle Mike McGlinchey, who is a candidate for injured reserve with an MCL injury. Additionally, defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers exited the Pittsburgh game with a concussion.
With the Broncos currently tied for the third-fewest sacks in the league through two games (4.0 sacks), they are clearly in need of reinforcements. Jonathon Cooper leads the team with 2.0 sacks, while Jonah Elliss and Zach Allen have contributed 1.0 sack each.
Though Farmer’s addition won’t immediately boost the team’s active roster, his potential as a situational pass rusher could come into play if injuries continue to mount. It’s also possible that the Broncos will make further roster moves, potentially elevating another practice squad player to the active roster as they prepare for Week 3.
The signing of Farmer reflects the Broncos’ desire to add depth and flexibility on defense as they navigate a difficult early season with several key injuries.
