Cowboys Encouraged to Sign Former Eagles Starter Without Delay.
On Sunday, September 15, the Dallas Cowboys suffered a heavy defeat to the New Orleans Saints, with the final score reading 44-19. NFL analyst Matt Holder, writing for Bleacher Report on September 16, described the game as a “humbling” experience for Mike McCarthy’s team. The Saints took an early lead and maintained it throughout the game, leaving the Cowboys at a 1-1 record as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Baltimore Ravens. Holder also suggests that the Cowboys should consider adding a former Philadelphia Eagles player to their roster.
Zach Cunningham Could Address Issues with the Running Game
In his article titled “Prioritizing Every Roster’s Biggest Weaknesses Before Week 3,” Holder recommends that the Cowboys bring in linebacker Zach Cunningham. Holder classifies Cunningham under the “add now” category, explaining that while the Cowboys’ linebackers performed well in Week 1, they struggled to contain Alvin Kamara during the game against the Saints. Kamara amassed 115 rushing yards and four touchdowns, plus 65 receiving yards and another touchdown. Holder believes Cunningham could help mitigate the running game issues, suggesting he could be a useful addition to the practice squad as a contingency plan.
Cunningham was drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, but after being waived by the Texans in December 2021, he was picked up by the Tennessee Titans. The Titans released him in February 2023, and the Eagles signed him in August 2023 before he became a free agent in March 2024.
Criticism of Cunningham’s Performance with the Eagles
In a September 14 article for Section 215, Devon Platana reviewed former Eagles players who are currently free agents, including Cunningham. Platana described Zach Cunningham stint with the Eagles as “forgettable,” noting that he recorded 54 solo tackles, four broken-up passes, and a fumble recovery in 13 games. Platana criticized Cunningham’s performance, stating that his play deteriorated over the season, finishing with a Pro Football Focus defensive grade of 59.6 or lower in six of his last nine games. Platana also highlighted Cunningham’s inconsistencies as a tackler and pass rusher, as well as his struggles in coverage, suggesting that his job prospects could remain limited until he demonstrates improved performance.
Tutu Atwell as a Potential Fit for the Cowboys
Holder also suggests that the Cowboys might consider targeting Tutu Atwell of the Los Angeles Rams in the 2024 NFL free agency. With Brandin Cooks potentially becoming a free agent and nearing his 31st birthday, the Cowboys might need a new deep threat if Cooks is not re-signed. Atwell, known for his speed since college, could serve as a more cost-effective option. Although he might not match Cooks’ overall impact, Atwell, who turns 25 next month, could provide a valuable deep threat for the Cowboys’ offense while being mindful of the salary cap.
