Raiders Poised to Snag Pro Bowl CB from AFC Rival

The Las Vegas Raiders have seen impressive play from their young cornerbacks through the first two games of the season. According to Pro Football Focus, Jack Jones and Jakorian Bennett have combined to allow just eight receptions, showcasing their ability to lock down opposing receivers. However, the team faces a potential concern with its lack of depth at the position, particularly if either Jones or Bennett were to suffer an injury.

At just 26 years old, Jones is the eldest cornerback on the Raiders’ roster, leaving the team with a youthful secondary that could benefit from the experience of a proven veteran. Alex Ballentine of *Bleacher Report* believes former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard would be the perfect solution for Las Vegas.

“It’s kind of amazing that Howard hasn’t been signed yet,” Ballentine wrote in a recent column. “He was a solid starter for the Miami Dolphins last season at a position where it isn’t always easy to find solid starters. Even if he’s dealt with some injury issues, he’s been a good player when he’s been on the field. That’s something the Raiders could use.”

Howard’s Familiarity with Patrick Graham’s Defense

Howard, a four-time Pro Bowler, brings the kind of experience the Raiders currently lack. With his knack for playmaking — leading the league in interceptions twice — Howard would be an asset to the Raiders’ secondary, even as a depth piece. His connection with Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham is another key factor, as the two worked together during their time in Miami in 2019.

Given the Raiders’ current predicament, especially with third-round pick Decamerion Richardson sidelined due to injury, Howard’s addition could provide much-needed insurance in case of further setbacks.

Jakorian Bennett Earning Praise

While the need for depth remains, the Raiders’ coaching staff has been thrilled with Jakorian Bennett’s development. Bennett has allowed just three receptions this season, showing poise in coverage against top-tier receivers. Head coach Antonio Pierce recently spoke highly of the second-year cornerback’s growth, particularly in his ability to make clutch plays.

“He just slowly kept chopping wood,” Pierce said. “Each and every day at practice, he’s going against Davante [Adams] and Jakobi [Meyers]. You can see the confidence growing.”

Pierce added that Bennett’s calm demeanor and confidence have helped him excel, even when targeted by opposing offenses. “He’s not panicking, he’s playing the ball, he’s trusting his speed, and he’s trusting his technique,” Pierce said.

Potential Veteran Reinforcements

Though Bennett and Jones have impressed, the Raiders’ young cornerbacks would greatly benefit from the presence of a seasoned player like Howard. With his experience, talent, and familiarity with the defensive scheme, Howard could provide valuable mentorship and depth to help solidify the Raiders’ secondary as they continue their quest for postseason success.
