The New England Patriots have made a move to address their ongoing offensive line concerns, signing offensive tackle Jalen McKenzie to the practice squad on Monday. This addition provides some much-needed depth to a unit that has been plagued by injuries and uncertainty early in the season.
McKenzie, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound lineman, is in his third NFL season. While he has yet to play in a regular-season game, the 25-year-old has experience at multiple positions across the offensive line. Over three preseasons, he has logged time at left tackle, right tackle, and right guard, showcasing his versatility.
Originally an undrafted free agent out of USC, McKenzie signed with the Tennessee Titans in 2022. After being released by the Titans, he spent time on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad during his rookie year. McKenzie’s most recent stint was with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he joined their practice squad in October 2023 before being released in late August during final roster cuts.
McKenzie’s college career with the Trojans saw him play 42 games, including 19 starts, primarily at left and right tackle. His versatility and experience at multiple positions make him a valuable asset for the Patriots, who are currently dealing with several issues on their offensive line.
The Patriots have had a rocky start to the 2024 season, and the offensive line has been a particular point of concern. Vederian Lowe, who started at left tackle in Week 2, is dealing with an injury, and the team is also without Chukwuma Okorafor, who was expected to be the starter but is no longer with the organization. McKenzie’s signing aims to provide some insurance as the Patriots look to solidify their offensive front.
With multiple absences at key positions, McKenzie could be in line for an opportunity should the injuries continue to mount. Although he has yet to make his regular-season debut, his ability to play multiple spots on the line might give him a chance to prove himself in New England.
