Although Aaron Jones and Davante Adams have moved on from the Green Bay Packers, both players began their careers at Lambeau Field. As Jones sought to establish himself in the NFL, he considered Adams one of his key mentors.
Adams was drafted in 2014, while Jones joined the league in 2017. During Jones’ draft year, the Packers selected three running backs, leading to friendly competition among veterans to predict which one would rise to the top of the depth chart.
In 2017, Adams was selected for his first Pro Bowl, making him a leader on the team. One day during practice, he approached Jones and instilled in him the confidence he needed, as reported by the Players Tribune.
“I got you as my dog in this race,” Adams told Jones.
Those words had a profound impact on Jones, who felt uplifted by the support from a player he admired. That brief moment in training camp helped propel Jones’ successful career with the Packers.
“Ok, Davante Adams believes in me??” Jones recounted.
Both players remained with the Packers until Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, while Jones signed with the Minnesota Vikings in the 2024 offseason. Despite now competing in different divisions, Jones continues to credit Adams for his early guidance and leadership.
During their time together, from 2017 to 2022, both players contributed to the Packers’ playoff appearances, though they never reached the Super Bowl. Adams played 116 games, amassing 669 receptions for 8,121 yards and 73 touchdowns, earning six Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro honors. Jones, while only selected for the Pro Bowl once, recorded impressive stats with 5,940 rushing yards and 45 touchdowns, plus 2,173 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns.
Though their paths have diverged, Jones will always cherish the lessons learned alongside Adams as they navigated their early NFL careers together.
