Patriot Key Defensive Starter Placed on Injured Reserve

The 1-2 are set to face the 1-2 San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium for their fourth game of the 2024 season. The Patriots are coming off a disappointing 3-24 defeat against the New York Jets last Thursday, where their defense struggled significantly, allowing 27 first downs and 400 total yards, including 267 through the air and 133 on the ground, while the Jets controlled the clock for over 40 minutes.

In their upcoming match, the Patriots will be challenged by the 49ers’ undermanned offense, as they will be missing a key defensive starter. Middle linebacker and team captain Ja’Whaun Bentley sustained a serious shoulder injury during the first quarter of their 20-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2. Initially ruled questionable, Bentley was unable to return, and subsequent tests confirmed a torn pectoral muscle, sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

Though the Patriots delayed placing him on injured reserve, he was ultimately ruled out for Week 3. Mike Reiss of ESPN NFL Nation reported that Bentley has now officially been placed on injured reserve, which significantly weakens the defense as they lose their captain and one of their top players. Kyle Dugger is set to take over as the defensive captain in Bentley’s absence.

Raekwon McMillan will step in as the starting middle linebacker. McMillan, who has been with the Patriots since 2021 but has faced multiple injuries, is eager for this chance. He expressed his feelings about the situation, acknowledging the opportunity despite the circumstances, and is determined to make the most of it as he looks to advance in his career.
