Bears Encouraged to Bench Top RB for a Sneak Peek at Promising Backup Talent

Running back Roschon Johnson provided a spark for the Chicago Bears’ rushing attack during their 21-16 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3. After being a healthy scratch in Week 1 and getting limited action in Week 2, Johnson made a significant impact against the Colts.

His statistics weren’t particularly impressive—he rushed eight times for 30 yards (3.8 yards per carry) and caught four passes for 32 yards—but given that the Bears’ leading back, D’Andre Swift, has only managed 68 yards on 37 carries (1.8 yards per carry) this season, Johnson’s performance was a welcome change.

According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, Johnson may receive the starting role when the Los Angeles Rams visit Soldier Field in Week 4. Fowler stated on September 25, “Watch for Bears running back Roschon Johnson to possibly get an extended look this week. Chicago has struggled mightily to run the ball and turned to Johnson, more of a bruiser, for eight carries in Week 3 vs. the Colts. The Bears need to get downhill faster.”

Swift, who was signed to a three-year, $24 million contract this offseason to take on the lead back position, has not lived up to expectations. Through three games, he has only one run exceeding 10 yards and averages just 1.7 yards after contact per attempt. In contrast, Johnson averaged 3.5 yards after contact against the Colts and forced two missed tackles, highlighting why the Bears might want to give him more opportunities.

Swift’s snap count has steadily declined since the season started: 70% in Week 1, 66% in Week 2, and down to 53% in Week 3. It’s clear that first-year offensive coordinator Shane Waldron intended to establish Swift early on, but that strategy has faltered. Now, it seems necessary to provide more chances to both Johnson and fellow running back Khalil Herbert.

Analysts and fans alike are calling for increased playing time for Johnson, recognizing his potential. Jacob Infante from Windy City Gridiron remarked, “Need to see more Roschon Johnson in the backfield. The run game isn’t working no matter who’s at RB, but Swift isn’t cutting it. Roschon has at least shown competence at times.”

However, the coaching staff, particularly Waldron, curiously pulled back on Johnson’s usage after a promising start against the Colts. Adam Jahns from The Athletic noted that while the Bears initially leaned on Johnson, they soon reduced his touches, with five of his eight carries occurring in the first quarter.

Johnson may not have the same versatility as Swift, but his physical, downhill running style could be exactly what the Bears need in their current scheme. Additionally, Herbert deserves more opportunities; he has only eight carries for 16 yards this season and has primarily been utilized in short-yardage situations. With over 700 rushing yards in 2022 and more than 600 in 2023, Herbert has proven himself as a capable playmaker.

As the Bears head into their matchup against the Rams, featuring Johnson and Herbert more prominently could be vital to reviving their faltering offense.
