Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson found himself at the center of criticism once again after suffering another injury during the Colts’ Week 4 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. On a 16-yard run, Richardson was hit by Steelers defensive backs Minkah Fitzpatrick and Deshon Elliott, and he left the field shortly after. Though Richardson returned two plays later, the Colts coaching staff decided to pull him when it became clear that he couldn’t accelerate as usual.

The rookie signal-caller attempted to come back after being evaluated in the locker room, but ultimately, the team opted to sideline him for the remainder of the game. Reserve quarterback Joe Flacco stepped in and led the Colts to a thrilling 27-24 victory over the previously undefeated Steelers, improving Indianapolis to 2-2 on the season.

Richardson Responds to “Injury-Prone” Label

Despite the Colts’ win, the focus quickly shifted to Richardson’s health and durability. Fans, concerned with his growing injury history, were quick to label the talented quarterback as “injury-prone,” sparking a heated debate across social media. On Wednesday, Richardson fired back at his critics.

“It’s football,” Richardson stated in response to the backlash. “I’m pretty sure if they got out of the house and came out here and got hit by somebody running 20-plus miles per hour every week, they would be sore and dealing with injuries as well.” His remarks underscored the physical toll that NFL players endure on a weekly basis, dismissing the criticism as part of the territory.

Richardson didn’t seem fazed by the harsh words from fans, adding, “People are gonna talk. That’s what people do. So, I’m not necessarily worried about it. Just trying to focus on getting better day by day.

Injury History Raising Concerns

Richardson’s response comes at a time when questions about his durability are becoming more pronounced. The Week 4 incident is the latest in a string of injuries the young quarterback has faced since joining the NFL. During his rookie season, Richardson suffered a concussion in Week 2 against the Houston Texans, which kept him out the following week. He returned in Week 4, but a grade-three AC joint sprain on his throwing shoulder in Week 5 sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Even before his professional career, Richardson dealt with injuries during his time at Florida. In 2021, he experienced a hamstring strain, a concussion, and a meniscus tear. This history, combined with his most recent oblique and abdominal strains, has only fueled fan concerns about his long-term durability.

Day-to-Day Heading Into Week 5

Richardson’s status for the Colts’ Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars remains uncertain, as the quarterback is considered day-to-day with his oblique and abdominal injuries. If he is unable to suit up, it would be the first game he misses this season, a reality that would only amplify the frustration among fans.

While Colts supporters may be justified in their concerns, Richardson’s potential is undeniable. The 6-foot-4 quarterback, known for his strong arm and dynamic athleticism, represents the future of the Colts franchise. However, his ability to stay on the field and lead the team week in and week out is becoming a critical talking point.

With his health in question and fans growing impatient, Richardson’s road to proving his critics wrong will be closely watched. His resilience and ability to bounce back from injuries could define his career in the long run.

For now, Colts fans can only wait and see whether their young quarterback will be available for a crucial divisional game against the Jaguars.
