The New England Patriots have faced a nightmarish start to the 2024 season, particularly on the offensive line, where they currently sit at the bottom of PFF’s O-line rankings. Not only have they ranked last overall, but they also hold the unfortunate title of the lowest pass block win rate in the league. With a staggering number of hurries, QB hits, pressures, and sacks allowed, the Patriots’ offensive line is struggling to protect their quarterback, leading to a frustrating start for the entire team.

Despite having the most salary cap space heading into free agency, General Manager Eliot Wolf failed to sign high-profile free agents who could have bolstered the line. This lack of depth and talent has been painfully apparent, compounded by injuries that have ravaged the unit. Key players like Vederian Lowe and Sidy Sow have missed critical games due to injury, while veteran center David Andrews is sidelined for the entire season. Adding to the woes, starting left guard Cole Strange remains on the physically unable-to-perform (PUP) list as he recovers from a season-ending patellar tear suffered in Week 15 last season.

Strange’s absence has left a gaping hole in the offensive line, and while there’s optimism surrounding his return later in the season, he hasn’t played yet. According to sources, the Patriots expect him back, but no specific timetable has been provided. His recovery will ultimately dictate when he can return to the field.

In the meantime, the Patriots have had to shuffle their lineup. Layden Robinson initially took over at right guard, while Michael Jordan filled in for Strange at left guard. After Sidy Sow returned from his ankle injury, he took over the left guard spot, leaving Robinson to adjust at right guard. If Sow can maintain his health, he is likely to continue starting on the left until Strange makes his long-awaited return. When that happens, Sow will likely shift back to right guard, providing the line with some much-needed stability.

The question remains: can the Patriots’ offensive line turn things around before it’s too late? With the team’s overall performance heavily reliant on the effectiveness of their blockers, the Patriots need their line to gel quickly, particularly with key matchups ahead. The hope is that Strange’s eventual return can spark a revival, but until then, the pressure is on the current starters to step up and protect their quarterback in an increasingly challenging season.

As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Patriots can address their offensive line woes and find a path back to contention.
