As the New England Patriots prepare for their Week 5 showdown against the Miami Dolphins, they’re facing more than just a struggling division rival. Injuries have been a constant thorn in the side of the Patriots, particularly along their offensive line, forcing GM Eliot Wolf to make continual adjustments to the roster.
The latest move saw the Patriots release wide receiver John Jiles from the practice squad. Jiles, a 24-year-old undrafted rookie, was signed to the team on September 24 but didn’t last long in New England. His release comes as part of an ongoing roster reshuffling process that has become a weekly occurrence as the Patriots try to manage their injury-depleted squad.

The news of Jiles’ release was announced by the Patriots via Twitter on October 1, 2024.
Jiles originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants, following a record-setting career at the University of West Florida. In Division II, he posted 1,255 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, setting a school record. His journey to the NFL also included stints at Fort Scott Community College and Virginia Union before landing with the Giants, and eventually, the Patriots.
More Roster Moves Amid Injuries
Alongside the release of Jiles, the Patriots also parted ways with veteran defensive tackle Armon Watts, who had been placed on the injured reserve list earlier this season. The move opens up more space for the Patriots to address their ever-growing list of injuries.
In response to the current roster needs, the Patriots signed offensive lineman Jerome Carvin and tight end Jack Westover to the practice squad. Given the team’s injury situation, especially on the offensive line, these new additions could be called up to the active roster sooner rather than later.
Patriots vs. Dolphins: An Opportunity to Bounce Back
Despite their injury concerns, the Patriots have a prime opportunity to right the ship against the Miami Dolphins in Week 5. However, with several starters nursing significant injuries, it will take some creative lineup juggling and contributions from lesser-known players to secure a much-needed win.
For now, the Patriots’ focus remains on shoring up their depth, hoping their recent practice squad additions can provide a spark as they navigate a difficult start to the season.
