The Detroit Lions have been hit hard by injuries this season, but as they come off a much-needed bye week, there is some optimism in the air. Head coach Dan Campbell shared encouraging news regarding the status of two crucial players as the team gears up for their matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
In a press conference Monday, Campbell addressed the status of safety Brian Branch and center Frank Ragnow, both of whom have been sidelined in recent weeks. Campbell indicated that both players practiced and were on track to return for the upcoming game.
“As of right now, they look good,” Campbell said.
This is especially important for the Lions. Branch, who missed Week 4 against Seattle due to a concussion and later illness, appears ready to rejoin the lineup. Branch’s return is a big boost for Detroit’s defense, as the rookie has been a standout in the secondary.
On the offensive side, the return of Ragnow is just as critical. The All-Pro center has been out since suffering a partially torn pectoral muscle against Arizona. While his status was initially unclear, Ragnow has been pushing to return to the field, a testament to his competitive drive. Campbell praised the veteran’s determination: “He always wants to go.” Although Ragnow was held out of the Seattle game, it looks like he could be back for Dallas, a much-needed reinforcement for the Lions’ offensive line.
Unfortunately, not all injury news was positive. Linebacker Derrick Barnes, who sustained a knee injury against Arizona and is currently on injured reserve, may not return this season. Campbell was less optimistic about Barnes’ recovery timeline, stating, “It’s tough to say right now. I think we will be fortunate to get him at any point this year. I don’t wanna say it’s not gonna happen, but I think we would be pretty fortunate if it does.”
This is a tough blow for Detroit, as Barnes was having an impressive season before the injury. His absence is significant, both for his production on the field and because he is playing on an expiring contract. While there is still hope for a late-season return, particularly if the Lions make a playoff run, it remains uncertain.
With some key players getting healthy, the Lions are hopeful that they can continue their strong start to the season. The bye week couldn’t have come at a better time, giving the team a chance to regroup and get back to full strength before facing a challenging Dallas squad. However, as injuries continue to mount, depth will be tested in the weeks ahead.
