Jessie Bates III is quickly building a strong case as the best free agent signing in Falcons history.

Terry Fontenot may not have had a lot of success drafting for the Falcons, but his free agent acquisitions since becoming Atlanta’s GM have been outstanding. The 2024 class is already delivering, with Kirk Cousins and Darnell Mooney proving to be worth every dollar. The 2023 class, headlined by Jessie Bates III, is particularly notable, and it’s not a stretch to say Bates could end up as the best free agent signing in Falcons history.

Though it’s been just over a season, Bates has already earned his place in discussions alongside Falcons legends like Michael Turner, Matt Bryant, Alex Mack, and Warrick Dunn. In his first year with Atlanta, he secured his first Pro Bowl selection and his second All-Pro nod, setting career highs across the board.

Bates recorded 128 tackles, six interceptions, and three forced fumbles, playing a key role in several Falcons victories. In their first game against the Saints, he was responsible for two red zone turnovers, including a pick-six. He also forced three turnovers in the season opener against the Panthers, which led to 17 points for Atlanta.

In 2023, Bates ranked second among safeties in tackles (132), second in interceptions (6), and tied for third in forced fumbles (3). His impact has carried into 2024, where he had a game-sealing interception against the Eagles and made crucial plays in the win over the Buccaneers.

In a moment where Kirk Cousins threw an interception, Bates saved the day by forcing not one, but two fumbles, keeping the Falcons’ chances alive. If Bates continues at this level, he will firmly be in the conversation as the greatest free agent signing in Falcons history.
