In a move that could signal a shift in Washington’s quarterback depth chart, the Commanders released Sam Hartman on Thursday. The release comes just days after veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota suited up for the first time this season as the backup to rookie sensation Jayden Daniels.

Mariota, who missed the first four weeks of the season due to groin and pectoral injuries, has solidified his position as the team’s No. 2 quarterback. His return to full health meant the Commanders had to make some tough decisions at the position, with Hartman being the odd man out.

Washington opted to keep Jeff Driskel as their third quarterback, giving the journeyman signal-caller a spot over Hartman. However, Hartman’s time with the team may not be over, as he is a candidate to land on the practice squad in the coming days.

Hartman’s Journey to Washington

Sam Hartman’s NFL journey began this past spring when he signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent following a stellar college career that spanned two schools. A standout at Wake Forest from 2018 to 2022, Hartman threw for an ACC-best 38 touchdowns in 2022, leading the Demon Deacons to a successful season. Following that campaign, he transferred to Notre Dame, where he continued to display his arm talent, completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 2023.

Hartman’s success in college made him an intriguing prospect for Washington, though his undrafted status meant he had an uphill battle to crack the final roster. Despite his impressive resume, the crowded quarterback room proved too competitive for Hartman to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.

What’s Next for Hartman?

While Hartman’s release may be disappointing, it’s not necessarily the end of his NFL dream. There is a good chance he could return to Washington’s practice squad, where he would have an opportunity to continue developing under the Commanders’ coaching staff. With injuries and unpredictable events always looming in the NFL, Hartman’s familiarity with the system could make him a valuable insurance option down the line.

For now, all eyes in Washington will remain on Jayden Daniels, whose historic start has energized the franchise, and on Mariota, who brings a wealth of experience to the quarterback room. The release of Hartman reflects the team’s belief in their current depth, but with the ever-changing nature of the NFL, Hartman’s story in Washington may be far from over.
