The Miami Dolphins may have found a potential solution to their uncertain quarterback situation, as ESPN’s Bill Barnwell suggested a trade that could bring in Carolina Panthers‘ QB Bryce Young. With starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa recovering from yet another concussion, Miami faces the challenge of securing a reliable backup — or even a potential long-term replacement — without breaking the bank.
In his proposal on October 17, Barnwell pitched the idea of Miami sending a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Panthers in exchange for Young, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2023 NFL Draft. While the Panthers have insisted they aren’t ready to part ways with their prized rookie, Barnwell points to Young’s benching as a sign that the franchise may be reconsidering its long-term plans.
From a football standpoint, Barnwell argues Young could thrive in head coach Mike McDaniel’s run-pass-option offense, which would leverage his mobility and playmaking skills. Young, though struggling early in his career, might find a better fit in Miami’s system compared to Carolina’s more traditional setup.
For Miami, this deal isn’t just about getting through the 2024 season. It’s about building for the future. With Tagovailoa’s injury history — specifically his series of concussions — questions about his long-term durability remain. Though Tua is signed through 2025, the Dolphins’ backup situation is a glaring weakness, and Young presents an intriguing high-upside option.
Financially, a deal for Young wouldn’t break the bank either. The 2023 rookie is playing on a four-year, $38 million deal, most of which has already been paid out through his $24.6 million signing bonus. If Miami were to pull off the trade, they would only be on the hook for $10.7 million through 2026. That’s a reasonable price for a young quarterback with a high ceiling, who could eventually emerge as a starter should Tua’s health continue to be a concern.
While there are no indications yet that Carolina is actively shopping Young, Barnwell’s proposal has stirred up debate, especially as the Panthers seem to be moving in a different direction under new leadership. For the Dolphins, this could be the kind of forward-thinking move that gives them a strong safety net behind Tagovailoa and potentially a star of the future.
