The Chicago Bears (4-2) are enjoying a promising third season under general manager Ryan Poles, who has methodically built the team for long-term success. While much of the rebuild is going according to plan, there remains a glaring issue with the offensive line—particularly with right guard Nate Davis.
Addressing the offensive line will be one of the Bears’ top priorities in the coming seasons, especially with a budding star quarterback in Caleb Williams under center. Protecting him will be crucial, and while the Bears will likely target an edge rusher in the 2025 NFL Draft, fortifying the offensive line cannot wait. One significant move toward that goal could come much sooner than anticipated.
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported on October 16 that Davis’ time with the Bears might be running out. Despite signing a three-year, $30 million contract before the 2023 season, Davis has struggled to stay healthy and has failed to meet expectations on the field. His performance has been so concerning that Biggs believes the Bears may consider releasing him by season’s end.
“I don’t think the Bears are trying to find the button to get Davis going and get his attention,” Biggs wrote. “I think this signals they will strongly consider releasing Davis when Ryan Bates and/or Larry Borom [is] ready to return from injured reserve.”
Davis has been plagued by injuries throughout his time in Chicago, but it’s not just health that has the Bears considering his future. Reports of tension with the coaching staff have surfaced, with questions about his work ethic in practice. When he has been on the field, his performance has been underwhelming, to say the least. Pro Football Focus currently ranks Davis 61st out of 75 qualifying offensive guards through the first six weeks of the season, highlighting his struggles to protect the Bears’ quarterbacks.
With Chicago currently in their bye week, the front office has time to assess their options. Should Bates or Borom return from injury soon, it’s possible that Davis could be phased out of the starting lineup, or worse, cut from the team.
The Bears will return to action in Week 8 against the Washington Commanders on October 27. How they address the ongoing issues with the offensive line will be crucial in their continued push for the playoffs and beyond. As Poles continues his rebuild, it’s clear that the Bears are prepared to make tough decisions to protect their future franchise quarterback.
For now, all eyes will be on how the team handles Nate Davis in the coming weeks, as his time in Chicago appears to be running short.
