“From Backup to Breakout: Broncos LB Forces Denver’s Hand on a Big-Money Extension”
As the 2024 season approached, the Denver Broncos had multiple players up for contract extensions, with two standing out—right guard Quinn Meinerz and cornerback Patrick Surtain II, both of whom secured extensions before the season began.
Left tackle Garett Bolles, now in the final year of his contract, has made significant improvements, prompting discussions about a possible extension. Similarly, rush linebacker Jonathon Cooper is continuing his impressive form from 2023, making him another potential extension candidate.
More recently, inside linebacker Justin Strnad has emerged as a surprise candidate for an extension. Initially re-signed to a one-year deal during the offseason as a depth piece, Strnad has stepped up after starter Alex Singleton suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Since moving into a starting role, Strnad has performed admirably.
Drafted by the Broncos in the fifth round in 2020, Strnad’s early career was hindered by a wrist injury that delayed his development. Though he struggled when he first saw NFL action in 2021, he proved his worth in 2023 on special teams. He nearly signed with the Carolina Panthers in the offseason but opted to return to Denver on a one-year, veteran minimum contract.
Strnad has since excelled, accumulating three sacks and displaying solid tackling and coverage skills. His play has exceeded expectations, positioning him as a strong candidate for an extension after the season.
However, like Singleton, who was allowed to test free agency before re-signing with the Broncos on a three-year, $18 million deal, Strnad might also explore the market. If he continues to perform well, he could command a deal in the range of three years and $21 million, given the rising salaries of NFL players.
In the end, Strnad’s continued performance will determine his future, but keeping him could be beneficial for the Broncos, especially with Cody Barton on a one-year deal. Strnad has made great strides since joining the team, and now might be the time for Denver to reward him.
