The Indianapolis Colts are making a bold shift in their quarterback strategy as veteran Joe Flacco steps in for Anthony Richardson in Week 9. Head coach Shane Steichen’s recent comments hinted at a potential change, and now, it’s official. According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler, Flacco will take over as the Colts aim to stay competitive in a crowded AFC playoff race.

Flacco has already made two starts for the Colts this season, but this marks the first time he’ll take the field while Richardson is fully healthy. The decision comes on the heels of a challenging season for Richardson, who has faced accuracy struggles and recently stirred controversy by removing himself from the Colts’ Week 8 matchup. The team addressed Richardson’s actions on Monday, with Steichen emphasizing the importance of a thorough evaluation before naming a starter for the upcoming game.

At 39, Flacco is an experienced signal-caller who brings a steady hand to the offense. After reviving his career mid-season last year with the Browns—leading them to a playoff berth—Flacco showed he still has something left in the tank. With Gardner Minshew priced out of Indianapolis, the Colts seized the chance to bring in Flacco, recognizing his ability to stabilize the passing game. So far in 2024, he has completed 65.7% of his passes with seven touchdowns and just one interception, contrasting with Richardson’s ongoing issues with consistency and accuracy.

The transition to Flacco might not bring the dynamic rushing component Richardson offers, but the Colts expect running back Jonathan Taylor’s presence to balance the offense. While Flacco’s pocket presence could provide immediate stability, the move also suggests a potential re-evaluation of Richardson’s development. Selected fourth overall, Richardson was understood to be a high-upside project. However, with injuries limiting him to just six games in his rookie year and 10 starts overall, the Colts may be reconsidering their aggressive approach in putting him under center so early in his career.

For now, Flacco’s performance will be closely watched as the Colts hope to gain traction in the AFC playoff chase, with Richardson waiting in the wings and the team assessing how best to nurture his talent long-term.
