In a move that many saw coming, the Las Vegas Raiders have parted ways with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy following a disappointing Week 9 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero broke the news, and the decision comes as the Raiders sit at a precarious 3-6, amid growing frustrations about their performance on offense.

The Final Straw

The decision to fire Getsy does not come as a shock to those following the team. Vic Tafur from The Athletic hinted at this possibility even before the game, noting that with the Raiders heading into their bye week, a coaching change could be on the horizon. Unfortunately for Getsy, the Raiders’ offense has struggled mightily, ranking 26th in points per game. Their 17-point output against the Bengals, a game that included a pick-six and a garbage-time touchdown, underscored the unit’s inability to move the ball effectively.

Despite the struggles, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the offensive woes extend beyond just the play-caller. Quarterback Gardner Minshew was benched yet again in favor of Desmond Ridder, a testament to the instability at the most important position on the field. Meanwhile, the offensive line has consistently faltered, failing to provide the necessary protection and run-blocking to give the offense a fighting chance.

A Change in Leadership

As the Raiders look to regroup during their bye week, interim head coach Antonio Pierce recognized the need for change. The team’s overall performance had spiraled, necessitating a shake-up among the coaching staff. In addition to Getsy, the Raiders also announced the dismissals of quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello and offensive line coach James Cregg. This marks a significant overhaul of the offensive coaching staff as the Raiders attempt to find a spark in the second half of the season.

Who’s Next?

At this stage, the question of who will take over as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator remains unanswered. However, the most logical candidate appears to be passing game coordinator Scott Turner. Turner has previous experience as a play-caller, having held the same position with the Washington Commanders from 2020 to 2022. His familiarity with the team’s personnel and his past success could provide the fresh perspective needed to revitalize the offense.

Looking Ahead

As the Raiders head into their bye week, the focus will undoubtedly be on reassessing their offensive strategy and finding ways to maximize their talent. With a crucial stretch of games coming up, it will be essential for the new offensive leadership to quickly implement changes and boost a unit that has struggled to find its rhythm.

The path forward is daunting, but as linebacker Maxx Crosby put it after the Bengals loss, “Everyone’s got to look in the mirror.” The Raiders are at a crossroads, and how they respond to this shake-up will define the remainder of their season.
