As the Jacksonville Jaguars prepare for their Week 10 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, their quarterback situation has become a bit more precarious. With Trevor Lawrence’s status for Sunday in doubt after a shoulder injury sustained in the Week 9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Jaguars have made a key move to bolster their depth at quarterback.
On Wednesday, the team signed C.J. Beathard to the 53-man roster from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. The move comes as insurance in case Lawrence is unable to suit up. Beathard, a veteran signal-caller with previous experience in Jacksonville, provides the Jaguars with a capable backup option, should Mac Jones be thrust into a starting role.
Trevor Lawrence’s Injury Update
Lawrence, the Jaguars’ franchise quarterback, appeared to be banged up during the second half of the team’s Week 9 loss to the Eagles. According to ESPN’s Michael DiRocco, Lawrence required medical attention at halftime after taking a hit, but he was able to return to the game. On Wednesday, Lawrence was listed on the injury report as a limited participant due to a left shoulder issue.
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson remained tight-lipped about Lawrence’s availability, noting that it was too early in the week to make a definitive call. “We’ll see where he’s at as the week progresses,” Pederson said. “It’s really too early to speculate.”
If Lawrence is unable to go, Beathard would likely step in as the backup behind Mac Jones, who was acquired by the Jaguars in a trade with the New England Patriots this offseason. Jones has only seen limited action in garbage time so far this season, completing six of nine passes for 28 yards. While not the ideal scenario, having a familiar face like Beathard, who has spent significant time with the Jaguars, would be a relief for Jacksonville in the event of a Lawrence absence.
Beathard’s Role and Experience
C.J. Beathard is no stranger to the Jaguars, having spent the preseason with the team competing for the backup quarterback job. Though Beathard was released with an injury settlement after a groin injury sidelined him, he was re-signed by Jacksonville this week to ensure they have enough quarterback depth.
In 2023, Beathard made seven appearances for the Jaguars, starting one game in place of an injured Lawrence. Over the course of the season, Beathard completed 40 of 53 passes for 349 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. While his time on the field was limited, Beathard’s experience in the Jaguars’ system could be invaluable as the team navigates the uncertainty surrounding Lawrence’s shoulder injury.
With Beathard now back in the fold, the Jaguars are better equipped to manage any quarterback challenges, especially with a critical stretch of games ahead.
Devin Duvernay Returns to Practice
In addition to bolstering their quarterback depth, the Jaguars also received some positive news on special teams. Wide receiver Devin Duvernay has been designated for return from injured reserve, opening his 21-day practice window. Duvernay, who has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 5, was the Jaguars’ primary returner before his injury.
With Duvernay out, rookie Parker Washington and running back Tank Bigsby have shared return duties. Duvernay, however, will likely reclaim his role as the team’s top return man once he is activated from injured reserve. The Jaguars have three weeks to decide whether to activate Duvernay or place him on season-ending IR.
Looking Ahead: Week 10 and Beyond
The Jaguars’ Week 10 matchup against the Vikings is shaping up to be a crucial one, as Jacksonville looks to keep pace in the tightly contested AFC South. While the situation surrounding Trevor Lawrence’s shoulder injury remains fluid, the team’s decision to sign C.J. Beathard ensures that they’ll be prepared for any outcome.
Whether Lawrence is able to take the field or not, Beathard’s familiarity with the offense and his previous experience with the Jaguars should provide a sense of security. And with Duvernay on the verge of returning, the Jaguars could be in position to make a strong second-half push for the playoffs.
As always, Jacksonville will continue to monitor the health of their star quarterback, but for now, they have the necessary depth and flexibility to face whatever challenges come their way.
