The Washington Commanders have been a revelation in 2024. With a 7-2 record and sitting atop the NFC East, they are off to their best start since 1996, and it’s clear that the franchise is building something special. The team has undergone a massive overhaul since their disastrous 4-13 campaign in 2023, parting ways with over half their roster before the start of training camp. Now, as they look to solidify their position as a true NFC contender, the next step in their evolution could involve making a splash in free agency — and one player who could be a perfect fit for the Commanders is longtime Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

A New Chapter for Lawrence?

Lawrence, currently in the final season of a 3-year, $40 million contract extension with the Cowboys, is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2024 season. At 32 years old, Lawrence’s best years may be behind him, but he remains a formidable presence on the field. A four-time Pro Bowler, including selections in 2022 and 2023 under former Cowboys defensive coordinator and now Commanders head coach Dan Quinn, Lawrence’s resume speaks for itself. He was also named a First-Team All-Pro in 2017 and has been an anchor of the Cowboys’ defense for years.

But with Lawrence now on injured reserve due to a foot injury, his future is very much up in the air. It’s possible that Lawrence could be looking to finish his career on a high note — joining a team with championship aspirations and one that can offer him a final lucrative contract. As the NFL continues to evolve, it’s clear that age is no longer as much of a barrier to securing a significant deal, as evidenced by the contract Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller signed at 35 years old (a six-year, $120 million deal in 2022).

According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, Lawrence could be eyeing a contract in the range of 3 years, worth between $30 million and $45 million. And there’s a strong case to be made that the Washington Commanders could be the perfect fit for the veteran pass rusher.

Commanders’ Defensive Needs and Cap Space

For Washington, bringing in Lawrence could make a lot of sense. The Commanders are currently projected to have $104.3 million in cap space for the 2025 season, making them one of the most financially flexible teams in the NFL. With a young nucleus on offense centered around rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders have the opportunity to invest heavily in their defense to complement their emerging star.

The team’s pass rush has been solid in 2024, but they’re likely to lose key contributors like Dante Fowler Jr. and Clelin Ferrell to free agency in 2025. Fowler, who currently leads the Commanders with 6.5 sacks, is playing on a modest $3.2 million contract in 2024. Ferrell and Dorance Armstrong, Washington’s starting defensive ends, are being paid a combined $8.5 million this season — a relative bargain considering their contributions. But even with these budget-friendly contracts, the Commanders could still use a veteran like Lawrence to elevate the defense to elite status.

Trading Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears in 2023 removed one of Washington’s most talented edge rushers, and Sweat went on to sign a 4-year, $98 million deal with $72 million guaranteed. The Commanders now have a gap to fill, and Lawrence could be just the player to do that. His leadership, experience, and ability to rush the passer would instantly upgrade the Commanders’ defensive front.

Lawrence’s Fit Under Dan Quinn

A key factor in Lawrence’s potential move to Washington is his prior relationship with head coach Dan Quinn. Quinn served as the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys from 2021 to 2023, and Lawrence was a crucial piece in Quinn’s defense during that time. Lawrence’s familiarity with Quinn’s system could allow him to make an immediate impact with Washington, as he’d already be well-versed in the defensive schemes and expectations.

Moreover, Lawrence’s presence in the locker room could be a boon for a Commanders defense that is still developing. His leadership, work ethic, and experience playing in big games would help guide Washington’s younger players and provide a stabilizing force up front.

A Win-Now Move for Washington?

The Commanders’ front office, led by general manager Adam Peters, has shown a clear intent to build a competitive roster while remaining financially flexible. Their strong start in 2024 — coupled with a promising core of young talent — suggests that they’re ready to make a move to compete in the NFC for years to come. Adding a player like Lawrence would not only bolster their pass rush but also help the Commanders address their immediate needs for a veteran presence on defense.

If Lawrence is seeking one last shot at a significant payday and a chance to win a championship, Washington could be a prime destination. With a solid defensive line, a rising offense led by Daniels, and ample cap space in 2025, the Commanders have the makings of a team that could make a serious run in the NFC in the near future.

Conclusion: A Perfect Match?

As the 2024 season unfolds and the Commanders continue to assert themselves as NFC contenders, the prospect of adding a player of DeMarcus Lawrence’s caliber becomes more and more intriguing. While it’s too early to say for sure, all signs point to Washington as a potential landing spot for the four-time Pro Bowler in 2025. With Dan Quinn at the helm, the team’s defensive needs, and the financial flexibility to make a splash in free agency, the Commanders could find themselves making a huge move to bring Lawrence aboard.

For Washington, adding a veteran like Lawrence could be the final piece of the puzzle in their quest to build a championship contender. And for Lawrence, it could be the perfect place to finish his illustrious career on a high note. Stay tuned — this is a free agency storyline worth watching closely.
