The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a move to reinforce their depth at running back, re-signing Jonathan Ward to their practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday. Ward’s re-addition to the squad comes just days after he was released on Saturday, as the team made room for the return of Ben Skowronek and Tyler Matakevich ahead of their win over the Washington Commanders.

Ward’s Role with the Steelers

Ward had a brief, yet intriguing stint on the Steelers’ active roster this season. He was elevated from the practice squad for three games and had one game on the active roster, but he never quite found a consistent role on offense. However, his ability to contribute on special teams was enough to keep him in the team’s plans as a depth option.

By re-signing him to the practice squad, the Steelers are ensuring that they have flexibility with their running back depth, especially with the uncertainty that can surround injuries throughout the season. If needed, Ward can easily be called back up to the active roster as a backup or special teams contributor.

Ward’s Journey to Pittsburgh

Ward’s journey to Pittsburgh is an interesting one. Signed as an undrafted free agent out of **Central Michigan** in the 2020 NFL Draft, Ward bounced around the league before finding a home with the **Arizona Cardinals**. After spending time with multiple teams, including the Cardinals, Ward earned an opportunity with the Steelers after impressing during rookie minicamp. His strong showing in training camp, where he separated himself from other players vying for a spot, earned him a role in Pittsburgh’s running back room.

When injuries hit the Steelers’ running back corps earlier in the season, Ward stepped up to not only contribute as a running back but also to play a vital role on special teams, where he quickly became a core player. His versatility and ability to contribute in multiple areas are qualities that have made him a valuable asset to the Steelers, even if he hasn’t been a focal point of the offense.

The Running Back Room Shuffle

However, with Cordarrelle Patterson returning to full health, Ward’s spot on the active roster was compromised, as the veteran running back reclaimed his role and added depth to the team. With the Steelers opting to bring in more seasoned players like Patterson, Ward’s window for meaningful snaps on offense was closed—at least for the time being.

For now, Ward will continue to wait on the practice squad, where the Steelers can bring him up when the need arises. The team has a crowded backfield with key players like **Najee Harris** and **Jalen Warren**, but having a player like Ward in the mix as an emergency option or special teams contributor adds crucial depth to the overall roster.

Ward’s NFL Experience

Though Ward’s NFL career has yet to truly take off, his time with the Steelers could provide a crucial opportunity for further development. His experience with Arizona and his ability to contribute in multiple areas—especially on special teams—could make him a valuable piece for Pittsburgh in the long run, even if he isn’t heavily featured in the offense at the moment. The Steelers have often relied on their depth at running back, and Ward’s presence on the practice squad ensures that they can keep a safety net in place should the need for a midseason call-up arise.

Looking Ahead

For now, Ward’s role with the Steelers is one of a depth player, contributing behind the scenes and waiting for the right opportunity to get back into action. With Pittsburgh’s running back situation constantly evolving, especially with the physical nature of the NFL, the Steelers will be glad to have Ward in their back pocket as they look toward the remainder of the season.

If injuries strike again or if a special teams spot opens up, don’t be surprised to see Ward elevated back to the active roster. His versatility, coupled with his strong training camp and special teams ability, could keep him in Pittsburgh’s plans as the season progresses.

As the Steelers continue to position themselves for a playoff run, Ward’s patience and readiness could play a key role in providing the team with the depth they need to stay competitive in the AFC.
