Meanwhile, Darnold’s solid performance could see him earn nearly $32.5 million annually in free agency, according to Spotrac.
Backup Nick Mullens has been serviceable but has a career record of 5-15 as a starter, including an 0-3 finish with the Vikings last season. His contract ends after this season, and with McCarthy expected to take over as the starter, Minnesota may not need to spend on a QB until next year.
An intriguing option for the Vikings could be Daniel Jones, recently released by the New York Giants despite a $160 million contract extension in 2023. After struggling in recent seasons, Jones may have a tough time securing a starting role, but Minnesota offers a favorable situation as a backup. The Vikings could sign him to a low-cost deal for the remainder of 2024 and keep him through 2025 as a potential backup or insurance policy if McCarthy faces health issues or struggles to transition into the starting role.
This move would also provide Jones with a solid opportunity to rebuild his value, especially given the Vikings’ strong roster. With Darnold’s $10 million salary coming off the books, Minnesota has the financial flexibility to bolster the position next spring.
