The Seattle Seahawks defense, which has shown marked improvement over the past two weeks, is about to get a significant boost with the potential return of edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu. Following a series of injury setbacks this season, Nwosu is expected to return to practice on Wednesday as he begins ramping up to game shape, offering Seattle’s defense a much-needed infusion of talent as the team heads into the final stretch of the season.
Seahawks defensive coordinator Clint Macdonald confirmed the news on Monday, stating that Nwosu would be practicing in some capacity, although the exact timeline for his return to game action remains unclear. “The plan is we’ll have him out there (Wednesday) in some capacity,” Macdonald explained, adding that the team would take things slowly with Nwosu’s ramp-up process.
Nwosu’s announcement of his imminent return came via a cryptic social media post, where the Seahawks’ highest-paid edge rusher simply shared “Perfect Timing,” alluding to his impending comeback. The 27-year-old, who was placed on injured reserve after suffering a thigh injury in Week 5 against the Giants, has missed the last five games but is now on track to make a return, potentially reinvigorating a defense that’s found new life in recent weeks.
This season has been a rollercoaster for Nwosu, who battled through an MCL sprain during the preseason and was unable to make his 2024 debut until Week 5. His thigh injury led to his placement on injured reserve, and while his return to practice is a promising sign, Nwosu is not expected to suit up for Seattle’s Week 13 matchup against the New York Jets. “This week is going to be pretty limited, so we won’t be seeing him this week, then we’ll take it from there,” Macdonald confirmed.
Nwosu’s 2022 season was one to remember, as he set a career-high with 9.5 sacks in his debut year with the Seahawks. However, his career has been marred by injuries, with a torn pectoral muscle derailing much of his 2023 campaign. If Nwosu can regain his form, he could be a game-changer for Seattle’s defense, especially as they prepare for the playoff push in the NFC.
For now, the Seahawks will remain cautious, knowing they have 21 days to activate Nwosu or send him back to injured reserve for the season. However, with his return to practice just around the corner, the Seahawks are optimistic about his ability to contribute down the stretch.
