Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie running back Bucky Irving left his team’s 28-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday with a back injury. Although the Buccaneers were able to clinch a key win in the NFC South battle, the injury to Irving has raised concerns about his availability for the upcoming games, including the crucial road matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Injury

Bucky Irving, who was already dealing with some bumps and bruises heading into the game, appeared to reaggravate his back during the contest. He had a modest outing, totaling four carries for three yards and a 15-yard reception before leaving the game. While Irving’s injury did not seem to be catastrophic, it’s enough to warrant attention. Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles gave an update on the situation during his Monday press conference, stating that the injury “tightened up” and the team would need to monitor how it progressed throughout the week.

Bowles explained, “We got to see how it feels. If we can get it loosened up, he should be okay. If not, we’ll see how the week goes.” Given the importance of Irving’s role in the offense, his status for the upcoming game against the Chargers remains uncertain. However, with some rest and treatment, there’s hope he could be ready to play, but the Bucs won’t rush him back if the injury persists.

A Strong Rookie Campaign

Irving’s rookie season has been nothing short of impressive. Drafted in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the former Oregon Ducks standout has quickly established himself as one of the best running backs from his class. Heading into Week 14, Irving has amassed 1,035 total yards and six touchdowns, making a significant impact both in the running game and as a receiver.

Irving has proven to be an excellent complement to fellow running back Rachaad White, offering the Buccaneers a dynamic and balanced backfield. His ability to grind out tough yards and break off explosive plays has given Tampa Bay an edge, especially as they’ve looked to stabilize their offense following a rough start to the season. With the Buccaneers in the hunt for a playoff spot and currently sitting in first place in the NFC South, Irving’s contributions will be key down the stretch.

Tampa Bay’s Playoff Push

With Sunday’s victory over the Raiders, Tampa Bay improved to 7-6 and took control of the NFC South division, thanks to the Atlanta Falcons’ 6-7 record. The Buccaneers now sit atop the standings, but the race is far from over. The Falcons, who had previously beaten the Buccaneers in both regular-season matchups, are still very much in the playoff picture. Tampa Bay will need to stay ahead of them and potentially finish a game ahead to secure the division title.

The Buccaneers’ win was even more critical considering the Falcons’ recent slide. Atlanta dropped their fourth consecutive game, this time to the Minnesota Vikings, and their playoff hopes are beginning to fade. The Falcons now face a Monday Night Football showdown against the Raiders, where a win could help them remain in contention. Still, the Buccaneers’ position is promising, and oddsmakers are giving them the edge to win the NFC South, with odds now sitting at -255.

Looking Ahead

As Tampa Bay heads into a key matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, they’ll have to navigate Irving’s injury status. The Chargers are a talented team that will present a tough test for the Buccaneers, especially on the road. Having Irving available would be a major boost for an offense that has shown flashes of brilliance but still has some growing pains.

With their sights set on a division title and the playoffs, Tampa Bay will need its young star to stay healthy and continue his breakout rookie campaign. If Irving can overcome his back issue, the Buccaneers will have the offensive firepower to make a serious push for the postseason and potentially host a playoff game in Raymond James Stadium.

In the meantime, the Bucs will be keeping their fingers crossed that Irving can get back on the field and help them finish strong in the NFC South race.
