Sean Payton and Broncos Eye $99 Million Super Bowl Champion.
The Denver Broncos might be a potential landing spot for free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., providing another weapon for quarterback Bo Nix. As the season nears its conclusion, finding reliable contributors becomes increasingly crucial, and Beckham could fit that need. Relationships play a significant role in the NFL, and Beckham’s prior connection with Broncos head coach Sean Payton could help him integrate into Denver’s offense.
NFL insider Josina Anderson recently suggested that the Broncos are one of several teams where Beckham could find a fit, based on factors such as head coach, quarterback, team contention, and future needs. Anderson mentioned that Beckham’s previous rapport with Payton could be a deciding factor, given Payton’s time as head coach of the New Orleans Saints while Beckham was at LSU, though they never worked together directly.
Beckham, now 32, has already earned over $99 million in his career. He joined the Miami Dolphins for the 2024 season on a one-year, $3 million contract, but his availability was hampered by injuries early in the season, and his role diminished as he got healthier. Beckham and the Dolphins mutually parted ways in December, with Beckham seeking a new opportunity.
Despite his past success, Beckham is no longer the dynamic playmaker he once was. His injuries and age have affected his production. In 2024, he had just nine catches for 55 yards, following a 2023 season with the Baltimore Ravens where he recorded 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns. Beckham’s most iconic moment came during his rookie year with the New York Giants when he made a one-handed touchdown catch against the Dallas Cowboys, a play that became a defining moment in NFL history.
However, Beckham’s physical decline and his injury history could make him a risky addition for the Broncos, who are in the midst of a youth movement. The team recently released veteran Josh Reynolds in favor of younger players like Devaughn Vele, Marvin Mims, and Troy Franklin. Adding Beckham could disrupt the team’s commitment to building for the future, especially considering his age and the time it would take for him to learn the Broncos’ system.
While Beckham’s experience and familiarity with Payton could make him an intriguing option, it remains uncertain if he fits within the Broncos’ current plans. The team may be better off continuing to focus on developing their young talent, with little room for a veteran receiver like Beckham. Only time will tell if Beckham finds a new home with the Broncos or elsewhere.
