The Kansas City Chiefs could be facing an issue with Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their highly anticipated Christmas Day clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but injuries continue to dominate the headlines for Andy Reid’s squad. During Monday’s press conference, Reid provided updates on several key players, including Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones, versatile defensive back Chamarri Conner, and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Chris Jones’ Status in Question

Chris Jones, arguably the heartbeat of the Chiefs’ defense, is dealing with a calf injury sustained during Kansas City’s Week 16 victory over the Houston Texans. The All-Pro defensive tackle leads the NFL in pressures this season with an astonishing 74, according to Pro Football Focus. His dominance on the line has been a major reason the Chiefs’ defense has consistently stifled opposing offenses.

The Chiefs are also the only team in the league with two players ranked in the top 11 for pressures, with George Karlaftis contributing 58. Losing Jones, even temporarily, would significantly impact Kansas City’s pass rush.

“Chris is making improvement,” Reid said. “(But) quick turnaround here, so we’ll just keep evaluating.”

With the Steelers boasting a much-improved offensive line, having Jones in the lineup could be the difference in Kansas City maintaining its AFC supremacy.

Mahomes Battling Through the Pain

Despite dealing with a high ankle sprain since Week 15, Patrick Mahomes continues to prove why he’s one of the league’s toughest competitors. The injury, sustained during the Chiefs’ victory over the Cleveland Browns, hasn’t kept him from leading Kansas City to key wins down the stretch.

“He (Mahomes) did good,” Reid said. “Yeah, it’s sore, but he did well. (He’s a) pretty tough kid, man. That was an amazing thing he did.”

Even at less than 100%, Mahomes has shown an uncanny ability to perform under pressure. With another marquee matchup looming, all eyes will be on the star quarterback as he looks to deliver yet another signature performance.

Chamarri Conner and D.J. Humphries Updates

Conner remains in the league’s concussion protocol after sustaining a head injury in Week 15 against the Browns. The rookie defensive back has been a key contributor in Kansas City’s secondary, and his absence was felt during Week 16. His availability for the Steelers game remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, left tackle D.J. Humphries continues to recover from a hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined since Week 14. Joe Thuney has filled in admirably, but the Chiefs are eager to get their starting tackle back as the playoffs near.

“Humphries is making improvement, but again, quick turnaround here,” Reid noted.

What’s Next for the Chiefs?

With the playoffs fast approaching, the Chiefs are in a delicate balancing act: managing injuries while maintaining their grip on the top seed in the AFC. At 12-3, Kansas City has already clinched the AFC West but knows every remaining game will have implications for home-field advantage and a potential first-round bye.

The Christmas Day matchup against the Steelers offers the perfect opportunity for the Chiefs to continue building momentum. However, success will depend on how well they can navigate their injury challenges and execute against a Pittsburgh team fighting to stay in playoff contention.

As the Chiefs prepare for the final stretch, one thing is clear: Andy Reid’s squad, even when banged up, remains one of the most formidable forces in the NFL. All eyes will be on Arrowhead Stadium this holiday season to see how Kansas City rises to the occasion.
