Vikings Strengthen Playoff Push by Signing QB Daniel Jones to Active Roster.

The Vikings added quarterback Daniel Jones to their active roster on Tuesday, waiving quarterback Brett Rypien to make room for him. Jones, who was signed to the Vikings’ practice squad on November 27 after being released by the Giants, could potentially bring in a compensatory draft pick for the team if he leaves in free agency this offseason.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell had previously mentioned on December 30 that Jones had been working hard behind the scenes, putting in “phenomenal work.” At that time, O’Connell noted there had been no discussion about how Jones’ promotion to the active roster would impact the current quarterback depth chart, which lists Sam Darnold at No. 1 and Nick Mullens as his backup.

Jones, who has played in two playoff games in his career, both in 2022 with the Giants, led his team to a 35-24 win over the Vikings in the wild-card round before losing to the Eagles in the divisional round. Earlier this season, Jones lost to the Vikings 28-6 in Week 1 and was benched on November 18 with the Giants at 2-8, eventually being released.

This is an awesome opportunity,” Jones said when he arrived in Minnesota on November 29. “Looking forward to learning the system, building relationships with these guys, and helping the team.”
