The Minnesota Vikings’ offense should remain strong next season if Aaron Jones returns to the roster. However, unforeseen circumstances could lead to a new starting running back in 2025.
Jones delivered an impressive performance in his debut season with the Vikings, racking up 1,546 yards from scrimmage and scoring 7 total touchdowns—all for a bargain price of $7 million. This output proved to be excellent value while keeping the salary cap impact minimal.

According to Spotrac, Jones’ market value for a new one-year deal is $5.6 million, which positions Minnesota well to re-sign the former Green Bay Packers star if they choose to. However, Jones, who turned 30 in December, may seek more security in terms of contract length and guaranteed money after such a productive season. With $64.4 million in projected salary cap space as of January 20, the Vikings have the flexibility to offer him a raise if desired.
That said, running backs historically face declining performance and health issues around age 30. Considering Jones’ injury history and the need for a reliable rusher to complement head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offensive system, the Vikings might explore other options. These could include drafting a high-upside prospect this April or pursuing a more affordable veteran in free agency.
One intriguing option is Cleveland Browns’ four-time Pro Bowler Nick Chubb. Evan Massey of ON SI recently listed Minnesota as a top landing spot for Chubb if Jones departs. “If the Vikings aren’t willing to spend what it takes to re-sign Jones, they could offer Chubb a prove-it deal,” Massey noted.
Chubb recently completed a three-year, $36 million contract with Cleveland but restructured the final year after a 2023 season-ending knee injury. He returned mid-season in 2024, playing eight games before a broken foot sidelined him again. Despite injuries, Chubb’s production from 2019-2022, averaging over 1,300 rushing yards annually, solidified his reputation as one of the league’s best backs.

At 29, Chubb is looking to rebuild his value in 2025, hoping to secure another multiyear deal. If he leaves Cleveland, Minnesota offers an ideal environment for him to regain his form and thrive statistically.
The Vikings could also consider elite collegiate talent in the 2025 NFL Draft. Among the top prospects is Ashton Jeanty of Boise State, who delivered a near-historic season in 2024 with over 2,600 rushing yards. Jeanty is expected to be in high demand but isn’t the only first-round option.
Iowa Hawkeyes running back Kaleb Johnson, also highly rated, has been projected by Dane Brugler of The Athletic as a potential selection for Minnesota at No. 24 overall. Brugler explained, “Anyone who watched the Vikings’ playoff collapse to the [Los Angeles] Rams knows Minnesota needs to address its offensive line in a major way this offseason. But assuming those upgrades come in free agency, the Vikings could look for help at running back here. Jeanty deservedly will command all of the Round 1 running back talk, but Johnson is worthy of landing in the top 32, as well. The Iowa back would be a great fit for Minnesota’s outside-zone scheme, and his impact would help open the passing game.”

Whether pursuing a veteran like Nick Chubb or selecting a top prospect like Jeanty or Johnson, the Vikings have multiple avenues to solidify their backfield for 2025.
