The Las Vegas Raiders had their sights set on Ben Johnson as their next head coach, but after he was hired by the Chicago Bears, the team quickly pivoted and brought in former Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager John Spytek as their new GM.
Spytek brings over 20 years of experience in NFL front offices and has been a GM candidate for multiple teams in recent years. While missing out on Johnson was a setback, hiring Spytek is a significant move for the Raiders.
Spytek played a key role in the Buccaneers’ success, including five straight playoff appearances and a Super Bowl win in 2020. Additionally, Spytek has a strong connection to Raiders minority owner Tom Brady, as they played together at Michigan, and Spytek was involved in Brady’s move to Tampa Bay.
With over $100 million in cap space and possibly 10 draft picks, Spytek has the resources to help turn the team around quickly, provided they hire the right head coach. There are a few strong candidates who have ties to Spytek.
Could Spytek Bring Todd Monken to the Raiders?
The Raiders had previously requested an interview with Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, but no updates have been given. It’s possible that Monken declined or was waiting to see who would become the GM. Spytek’s hiring might improve their chances with Monken, as Spytek was part of the Buccaneers organization when Monken served as their offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2018. Having worked together for three years, they likely have some familiarity with each other.
However, it’s also possible that their relationship may not be strong enough to attract Monken to Las Vegas. If they have a positive working dynamic, Spytek could play a pivotal role in persuading Monken to take the interview.
Monken, who led the NFL’s top offense this season, has never had a head coaching opportunity at the NFL level. If he takes the Raiders job, he could reunite with star tight end Brock Bowers, whom he coached at Georgia before joining the Ravens.
What About Liam Coen?
Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen is another rising star in the NFL, though there has been no indication that the Raiders have requested an interview. Coen, who withdrew from the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching search, appears to be selective with his options. However, Coen and Spytek worked together this past year, which could make the Raiders a more appealing choice for Coen.
If the Raiders are looking to hire a younger head coach, Coen, at 39 years old, would be a more fitting choice compared to the 58-year-old Monken. While it’s unclear if Coen will even interview with the Raiders, Spytek’s hiring makes him someone to keep an eye on as the Raiders take their time in making a decision.
