Detroit Lions Face Key Offseason Decisions: Will Kevin Zeitler Stay or Go?

The Detroit Lions are heading into a pivotal offseason following their unexpected divisional-round loss to the Washington Commanders as the NFC’s top seed. General manager Brad Holmes has the unenviable task of building on the franchise’s first No. 1 seed since 1991 while addressing several pressing roster concerns, including the potential departure of key players like starting right guard Kevin Zeitler.

Zeitler, a 12-year veteran, signed a one-year deal with Detroit last offseason and played a crucial role in fortifying the Lions’ offensive line. Widely regarded as one of the best interior linemen in football in 2024, Zeitler will hit unrestricted free agency this offseason, and he’s expected to attract significant interest on the open market.

Zeitler’s Impact in 2024

Zeitler’s performance in 2024 proved why he remains one of the most reliable guards in the league. Starting 16 games for Detroit, he allowed just 18 pressures on 577 pass-blocking snaps, earning a stellar 87.2 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF). Though he surrendered five sacks, his overall consistency and leadership were vital in the Lions’ offensive success.

At 35 years old, Zeitler is entering free agency with a strong résumé, which includes a Pro Bowl nod and sustained success across multiple franchises. Despite his age, his durability and effectiveness could make him one of the top targets for teams seeking to shore up their offensive lines.

Vikings Emerge as a Top Suitor

One team already linked to Zeitler is the Minnesota Vikings. PFF’s Mason Cameron identified the Vikings as a strong landing spot for the veteran guard, citing their dire need for improved interior line play.

“The Vikings need all the help they can muster to halt the constant flow of interior pressure they experienced in 2024, having allowed the highest interior pressure rate (18.8%) in the NFL,” Cameron noted.

The Vikings face their own uncertainty at right guard, with starter Dalton Risner set to hit free agency. If Minnesota is unable to re-sign Risner, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah could turn to Zeitler as a savvy veteran replacement. Zeitler’s ability to excel in both pass protection and run blocking would be an ideal solution to their struggles along the offensive line.

Should the Lions Bring Zeitler Back?

For the Lions, the decision to retain Zeitler could come down to their financial flexibility and their belief in younger options within the organization. Detroit’s offensive line has been one of the team’s strengths in recent years, and losing a player of Zeitler’s caliber could disrupt their offensive rhythm.

Holmes will need to weigh Zeitler’s market value against other areas of need on the roster, but keeping the battle-tested guard in the fold would provide stability for a team looking to make another deep playoff run in 2025.

The Road Ahead

If Zeitler departs Detroit, the Lions will likely need to turn to free agency or the draft to replace his production. Meanwhile, the Vikings appear ready to pounce on the opportunity to bring Zeitler to Minnesota, especially if Risner moves on.

For both franchises, Kevin Zeitler’s decision will carry significant weight as they navigate an offseason filled with high stakes and lofty expectations. Whether he stays in the Motor City or moves to a divisional rival, Zeitler’s impact on the NFC North race in 2025 is certain to be felt.
