Texans Shake Up Coaching Staff: Bobby Slowik Out as Offensive Coordinator
The Houston Texans are gearing up for a significant shift in their coaching staff, as Bobby Slowik is officially out as offensive coordinator, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. This move signals a critical juncture for the Texans, who aim to take the next step toward cementing themselves among the AFC’s elite.
Slowik’s Rise and Fall
Slowik joined the Texans in 2023, following head coach DeMeco Ryans from the San Francisco 49ers. During his six-year tenure in San Francisco, Slowik rose through the ranks, including serving as the 49ers’ pass game coordinator in 2021-22. His innovative approach and success with the 49ers made him a hot commodity, earning him interviews for head coaching positions with teams like the Panthers, Titans, and Seahawks.
In his first season as Houston’s offensive coordinator, Slowik helped guide rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud to a stellar debut, culminating in a divisional-round playoff run. However, Slowik’s offense struggled to maintain that momentum in 2024. While the Texans showed slight improvement in their ground game—thanks largely to Joe Mixon’s contributions—the passing attack regressed significantly.
Injuries along the offensive line and in the receiving corps, including the losses of Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell, further hindered the unit. Despite a hard-fought home playoff win against the Chargers, the Texans couldn’t advance past the divisional round, raising questions about the offense’s long-term trajectory.
Searching for New Leadership
DeMeco Ryans and the Texans front office are now tasked with finding the right offensive mind to maximize the potential of a roster led by C.J. Stroud. Internal candidates reportedly include Jerod Johnson, Bill Lazor, and Ben McDaniels. Externally, Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has emerged as a name to watch.
The Texans will also need to replace offensive line coach Chris Strausser, who is reportedly departing alongside Slowik. The coaching overhaul presents a chance to inject new energy and ideas into an offense that still has untapped potential.
A Core Built Around C.J. Stroud
With Stroud under contract through at least 2027 (assuming the team exercises his fifth-year option), the Texans have time to build a sustainable offensive powerhouse. Stroud’s development remains the franchise’s focal point, and finding the right offensive coordinator will be pivotal to his continued growth.
The Texans are now faced with a critical offseason. If Ryans and his staff can secure the right coaching talent, address injuries, and strengthen the roster, Houston has the pieces to rise in a competitive AFC. However, with Bobby Slowik’s departure, the Texans’ path forward begins with answering one key question: Who will lead their offense into the future?
Stay tuned as the Texans’ coaching search unfolds and the team looks to capitalize on its potential heading into the 2025 season.
