NFL trades involving only players are rare, but Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department has suggested a unique move that could see the Miami Dolphins acquire versatile offensive lineman Joe Thuney. The proposed trade would send veteran offensive tackle Terron Armstead from the Dolphins to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Thuney.
According to Bleacher Report, this swap would give both teams an opportunity to benefit from the change, as Thuney could help solidify the Dolphins’ offensive line, especially the interior, an area that has been challenging to address since Mike McDaniel became head coach. The Chiefs, facing a financial dilemma with Trey Smith due for an extension, might view this trade as a viable solution, especially with Thuney stepping in at left tackle during the postseason.
This trade would create a comparable financial impact for both teams. Thuney is the more consistent and healthier player, although Armstead plays a more premium position at tackle, which is more difficult to fill. The swap could potentially improve both teams’ offensive lines.
Even if the Chiefs lose to the Eagles on February 9, Thuney’s four Super Bowl titles (two with the Chiefs and two with the Patriots) and his recent Pro Bowl appearances make him a key asset. Armstead, meanwhile, battled injuries but still earned Pro Bowl honors in 2022 and 2023.
The Dolphins would benefit from Thuney’s All-Pro talent, which could be instrumental in improving their struggling rushing game. Miami’s rushing offense ranked 21st in total yards and 28th in yards per carry in 2024, and the decline in rushing performance over the season points to the need for an upgrade. Thuney’s presence on the interior could make a significant impact.
The Chiefs, however, might be reluctant to part with Thuney, given his experience and versatility, particularly after his strong performance at left tackle during the playoffs. With one more year left on Thuney’s contract, the Chiefs may value his leadership and championship pedigree too highly to trade him, despite the potential benefits of acquiring Armstead and reworking his deal to retain Trey Smith.
