However, if the Chiefs lose, some may return for another season. But what about Patrick Mahomes? At 29 years old, he still seems to have plenty of football left in him. After learning that Leo Messi would be attending the Super Bowl, the discussion turned to how much longer Mahomes could play. Acknowledging Messi’s 37 years, Mahomes stated he at least hopes to play until he’s 39. “I want to get to 39 at least,” Mahomes said candidly. “Especially if I’m still playing at the level he’s [Messi] playing at, then I’m going to try to stay on the field… I’m going to keep my body in shape and prepare to play as long as I can, as long as it doesn’t take away from my family or hurt the football team.” This means we could be watching Mahomes play in the NFL for at least another decade, much to the frustration of several AFC teams who have felt his dominance.
With one win away from making history and potentially securing three consecutive Super Bowl victories, the Chiefs are focused on their ultimate goal, with the Eagles standing in their way. Throughout this week, Mahomes has brushed off silly anti-Chiefs narratives — “I don’t care!” he said in response to the notion that the games are “fixed” in his team’s favor. Now, Mahomes is focused on staying sharp for the long haul. NFL players often seek longevity in their careers, and considering Mahomes has already achieved so much in just eight seasons, reaching 39 years old would mark an impressive career. Luckily, it seems we’ll have at least another decade to watch Mahomes do his thing.
