The Miami Dolphins have officially added Bobby Slowik to their coaching staff, bringing in the former Houston Texans offensive coordinator as their senior passing game coordinator. The move, first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, reunites Slowik with head coach Mike McDaniel, with whom he previously worked in both Washington and San Francisco.
A Strategic Addition to the Dolphins’ Coaching Staff
Slowik’s arrival in Miami comes just weeks after he was dismissed from his role as Houston’s offensive coordinator. Despite his departure, he remains a respected offensive mind, having drawn head-coaching interviews following a stellar 2023 campaign in which he helped rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud thrive in his first NFL season.
While some speculated that Slowik could take over as Miami’s wide receivers coach—replacing Wes Welker, who also had ties to McDaniel—the Dolphins instead filled that position with former Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach Robert Prince. Instead, Slowik will focus on the team’s passing attack, an area where Miami already excels with one of the league’s most explosive aerial offenses.
A Familiar Face for McDaniel
Slowik and McDaniel’s connection dates back over a decade. The two first worked together as assistants in Washington from 2011 to 2013 and later reunited with the San Francisco 49ers, where Slowik spent six seasons in various roles. In 2021, just before McDaniel became Miami’s head coach, Slowik was San Francisco’s offensive pass game specialist, a title that foreshadowed his future role with the Dolphins.
His addition bolsters an offensive staff that already includes quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell, who also holds the title of passing game coordinator. How Slowik’s responsibilities will be divided remains to be seen, but his expertise should be a valuable asset in refining Miami’s high-powered attack led by Tua Tagovailoa and a dynamic receiving corps.
A Coaching Legacy Continues
Slowik’s hiring also keeps a family connection alive within the Dolphins’ organization. His brother, Ryan Slowik, currently serves as Miami’s defensive backs coach, marking another instance of familial ties within the franchise’s coaching ranks. The Dolphins have a history of hiring coaching duos from the same family, including Jason and Judd Garrett in 2005 and father-son pairings like Don and David Shula.
What’s Next for Slowik?
While Slowik likely had ambitions of landing another offensive coordinator role immediately, his step back into a senior assistant position could serve as a valuable reset. Given his proven offensive acumen, this role with the Dolphins could position him for another shot at a coordinator—or even head coaching—gig in the near future.
As Miami continues to refine its already potent offense, Slowik’s addition provides another sharp offensive mind to McDaniel’s staff. With his experience and deep understanding of the passing game, he could play a key role in the Dolphins’ push for playoff success in 2025 and beyond.
